The Atlanta Constitution

Dateline Sarajevo, June 28, 1914: Archduke Francis Ferdinand is assassinated. Rumblings of another war begin. Read about it within the pages of a newspaper that was influential in reporting the aftermath of our nation's earlier great conflict, the American Civil War.

Note: A few editions of The Atlanta Constitution are still being scanned. Due to poor microfilm image quality, the October 1905 issues will not be included in this series.

Chicago Tribune

The Great Chicago Fire of October 8-10, 1871, is one of many historic local events reported by the Second City's largest newspaper. Before front-page news was printed on the front page of a newspaper, a reader needed to look inside for the story. In this 8 October 1871 edition, the Trib reports the first headlines on page 3, opposite an insurance company's ad reminding residents to "prepare for fall and winter fires."
