Doyle B Pitts

Doyle B. Pitts, army serial # 6 273 422 was a member of the U.S. Army. Date of Birth: Sep 9, 1916 in Big Cabin, OK. From his military records, it seems he joined three (3) different times.

1. Doyle B. Pitts was a member of the Regular Army. Active Service Dates from Aug 11, 1936 - Aug 11, 1939. Received an Honorable Discharge as a PFC. Served in 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery and Battery B, 882nd Field Artillery.

2. Doyle B. Pitts was a member of the Regular Army. Active service dates Aug 12, 1939 to Dec 8, 1944. Received an Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant.

3. Doyle B. Pitts, Residence: Commanche Co., OK, Place of enlistment: Ft. Sill, OK. Active service dates from Jun 18, 1946 to Mar 25, 1947. Signed up in the Branch of: Signal Corps, Term of enlistment: Enlistment for Hawaiian Dept., Nativity: OK, Year of Birth: 1916, Race: White, Education: 4 years of High School, Civilian Occupation: Store Manager, Marital Status: Married, Component of the Army: Regular Army, Card # 9, Box # 0027 Film Reel # 1.27#. Served during World War II and obituary stated he served in Europe. A letter from Birdell, his second wife stated he served in Italy. Does anyone else know anything about overseas time?

After Doyle served with the U.S. Army while he lived in Lawton, OK he was half owners of a used car dealership with another person. He later sold his half of the business to the other half owner and had enough to purchase his land and home in Wanette. (Source: Darren - is this correct?)

Darren also told me a story from Papa. He said that while papa was in the military he would go up in these small planes and they would take photographs (reconnaissance missions) and while he was up in the plane he was shot in the arm. He told Darren he dug it out of his arm while he was still in the plane. (Is this true?) Has anyone heard this story?

They were married until she died in 1969.

Doyle's best accomplishments were his family.  He was a hard working man and was a good father, husband, son, brother, uncle and grandfather.  He was funny and had a good sense of humor. 

He was the father of five children, Philip Bradley, Milton Doyle, Donna Wynelle, Rueldine Elaine, Peggy Marie and Peggy Sue Pitts.

He was loved by all who knew him.

He was sick and removed to an OKC hospital.  They kept him on drugs which made him not himself.  And boy was he pissed because he wanted to go home.  When I visited him, he kept telling us grandkids and his own kids he wanted to just go home.  I don't even think they would have let us take him home even if we wanted too.  I feel bad about that but there was nothing that I could do.
